Alyce Santoro’s Sonic Success (Sonic Fabric) #philosoprops
‘My work with Sonic Fabric over the past 10 years has been full of unexpected twists and turns – sometimes I feel as if the project has literally taken on a life of its own. While I continue to show sonic shaman-superhero dresses in museums and galleries around the world, my smaller art-products (I call them the “philosoprops”) have been steadily making their way out into mainstream. The sonic fabric ties have recently appeared in various magazines and US television shows, even on celebrity Jason Mraz at the Grammy Awards! My sense is that the tumultuous state of the world economy combined with deep concern over our environment has caused a heightened awareness of “green” and “conscious” goods in the market. Personally I have been experiencing a remarkable increase in interest in my work over the course of the past year as the focus on recycled and handmade products has grown steadily. I have recently added the Joseph Beuys-inspired fedora hat to my line of small, good-vibe emitting sonic fabric accessories. As I have long had a special fondness for headgear (including tendrils, antennae, and other appendages), I feel that the Joseph Beuys hat is one of my most powerful and effective philosoprops.’ (via ANAT)
Electrosmog Festival – International Festival for Sustainable Mobility
Electrosmog Festival – International Festival for Sustainable Mobility Various Locations :: March 18 – 20, 2010
Revolving around the concept of Sustainable Immobility, the festival will introduce and explore this concept in theory and practice. The festival aims to realise the fundamental promise of the information age that communication technologies can replace the need for physical mobility, and thus both contribute to ecological stability as well as a more rewarding both deep-local and translocal life-style. The festival asks audiences and presenters to travel no further than local/regional boundaries to attend.
Brad Nunn’s Machine Gun Walker on display at ANAT (South Australia)
Standing three and a half meters tall, Machine Gun Walker dominates its display space, demanding attention. Its size reflecting the power of warfare, while the remarkably lightweight frame questions human frailties. Built to address the loss of empowerment that can often be faced when using physical aids, the work empowers the user. Creator Brad Nunn comments, “…by creating this fantasy piece I am able to recapture some of traits of heroism and strength.”
Machine Gun Walker (2004) can be seen on display at the ANAT office – Level 2, 124 North Terrace, South Australia. Open 10am – 4pm.
