Power Shift 2010 – Youth Summit for Climate Change and #Sustainability
The Australian Youth Climate Coalition is a coalition of Australia’s largest youth organisations and over 50,000 young people from across Australia. Their mission is to build a generation wide movement to solve climate change before it’s too late, through bringing about short term political impact and long term cultural change.
AYCC plan an innovative youth summit to be held in Geelong that hopes to change the way young people see the climate crisis. Offering new skills, connecting with other awesome people and giving you the power to make a difference.
Come to Power Shift 2010 in Geelong from to August 14 to 15.
Why now? Because there will be a federal election in the next few months and at the moment, neither major political party has a strong climate policy.
That’s just not good enough! The AYCC has a positive, achievable vision for Australia’s renewable energy future, and Power Shift will give us the skills to turn this into reality.
Shift the power to a clean, sustainable future, and tell me more about Power Shift 2010.
Power Shift is part conference, part festival, part training, part celebration of the power of young people to change the world, and so much more. Listen to amazing keynote speakers, participate in hands on workshops, connect with people from your region, hear live music and make new friends. Join a generation-wide movement and gain the new skills, resources and networks you need to lead creative climate actions in your community.
AYCC can’t announce the speakers just yet, but last year they had Al Gore (via video), Tim Flannery, Senators Nick Xenophon and Christine Milne and Brooke Satchwell from Neighbours.
Sign up before July 1 and a discount will be automatically applied. If you need help figuring out how to get there, or to get some tips on how to fundraise to send a group to Power Shift, please contact the recruitment coordinator Sam: sam.millar@youthclimatecoalition.org. -

XII International Festival for New Media Culture

in collaboration with „Textures” – the 6th European meeting of the Society for Literature, Science and the ArtsRiga, June 14 – 20, 2010

Birthday Suit – the Winter 2010 #fashion offering from the #Kingpins
The Emperor got around in his birthday suit when two sneaky weavers promised him the finest suit of clothes from a fabric invisible to anyone who was an incompetent ninny. Ninny he was – not because he couldn’t see the fabric, but because he trusted a pair of mimes. Mimes are creepy, everyone knows that.
This Birthday Suit collection is the opposite of invisible. Where some collections have one story behind them and others have none, the Winter 2010 offering from transgressive drag all-femme improv group The Kingpins has about five different narratives underpinning its hitched full petticoats, butterfly ikat prints and trademark catsuits. It’s wild west crossed with ancient tribal and a touch of S&M.
Hitting the racks this week, get your hands on the Smokin’ silk tee , or the teal corduroy jumpsuit and you’ll guarantee your crown jewels are well and truly covered with the most outlandishly stylish of threads. You’re no ninny in the nuddy.

7 Evils in One! #exhibition #melbourne

11th June to 24th June, 2010
The title 7 Evils in One! is derived from the work of American artist and comic book illustrator Robert Crumb (Fritz the Cat, Mr Natural). Crumb’s work is widely recognised for it’s distinctive style and subversive, satirical content.
In 1994 Kitchen Sink Press commissioned Robert Crumb to design the packaging of a chocolate bar using his character, “Devil Girl”. On the back of the wrapper of Devil Girl Choco Bar the ingredients were listed:
7 Evils in One! 1-Delicious Taste; 2-Quick, cheap buzz;
3-Bad for your health; 4-Leads to hard drugs;
5-Waste of money; 6-Made by sleazy businessmen;
7-Exploits women.The above tongue-in-cheek anti-marketing statement sets the scene for what to expect from these seven artists. With a range of popular culture influences from; comic books, cartoons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Simpsons, Seinfeld, Spiderman, basketball cards, heavy metal paraphernalia, toys from the 70’s and all things mystical and psychedelic, these artists revel in childhood fantasies whilst poking fun at Western culture.
Don’t miss the opening night performance by Melbourne band Love Connection and many thanks to Androniki Douramakos for her mountain installation.
Opening Thursday 10th June 6-9pm.

10 transforming youths by Philip Brophy #Melbourne #signal
Commissioned as part of City of Melbourne’s Public Art Program this four screen graphic animation was conceived as the inaugural screen based Signal artwork. Active at night, the work marks and transforms the site by presenting a poetic and elegiac panorama of youth portraiture. The effect is in stark contrast to the city’s mediascape saturated with images of youth as portrayed through corporate marketing.
This commission evidences Brophy’s conceptual concerns with contemporary media expressed through a sharp pop sensibility.
Screening: 3 June to 18 July, visible after dark
Artist Talk: Thursday 17 June, 6 – 7.30pm
Practical Demonstration: Saturday 26 June, 4– 6pmBoth events are free but RSVP essential as places limited, bookings via signal@melbourne.vic.gov.au
