  • Whips are so last season, let Australian jockeys know how you feel.

Good timing for the RSPCA to launch their campaign Less is More, Whips are so Last Season – a girl’s guide to the races. It’s a really nice campaign that allows people to show their support by recording a personal message to Australian jockeys. Hopefully there will be lots of participation leading up to the Melbourne cup.

Show Australian jockeys that you think less is more when it comes to whips.

Email a photo of you (perhaps in your raceday best) holding a Less is more sign to post@rspcalessismore.posterous.com, along with your name and email address somewhere in the message body.

We want to show the Australian Racing Board and the Australian Jockeys Association these photos as an indication of public support for this issue, so make sure your friends get involved too!

All submissions will be held briefly for moderation to ensure contributions are tasteful.

    For more information, see http://www.rspca.org.au/lessismore

  • Good, Clean & Fair an afternoon with Carlo Petrini founder of Slow Food

Carlo Petrini, founder of the Slow Food movement, shares his revolutionary ideas about food with Sydney International Food Festival director Joanna Savill, followed by a short question and answer session.

In what is sure to be one of the highlights of this year’s festival, Petrini will deliver a manifesto for change based on the simple principles of good, clean and fair, which he explains as follows:

“Slow Food is good, clean and fair food. We believe that the food we eat should taste good; that it should be produced in a clean way that does not harm the environment, animal welfare or our health; and that food producers should receive fair compensation for their work.”

From humble beginnings as a protest against the opening of a McDonalds near the Spanish Steps in Rome, the Slow Food movement has blossomed internationally to include over 100,000 members – including an Australian branch.

Passionate, thought-provoking and challenging, prepare to rethink the politics of your refrigerator; after spending an afternoon with Carlo Petrini, you’ll soon find yourself saving the planet – one meal at a time.

  • RSPCA Animal Walk is back. Help celebrate RSPCA Awareness Week

To celebrate RSPCA Awareness Week (Oct 1 – 8), the RSPCA has launched a digitally restored version of its most famous television advertisement – Animal Walk.

From the biggest elephant to the smallest wombat, the iconic production from the RSPCA will amble back onto television screens over the coming weeks.

Created 21 years ago, Animal Walk was the first brand ad of its kind in Australia and remains one of the most recgonised advertisements ever made in this country.

The production not only introduced Australians to their favourite little bandaged wombat but it was actually responsible for coining the RSPCA’s slogan: For all creatures great and small. The wombat went on to become the RSPCA’s much-loved mascot.

  • Demand that the slaughter of dolphins in Taiji, Japan stops now.

For the past week, Ric O’Barry and a team of activists from Save Japan Dolphins and Earth Island Institute have been in Taiji, Japan, the site of the largest killing of dolphins in the world. Their brave vigil has brought media coverage from around the world and it shone a light on the dangers to dolphins and people if we let this slaughter continue. As awareness and media coverage grew in Japan, the cove remained tranquil and no dolphins were killed.

But around 5:30 am yesterday, 13 fishing boats left Taiji’s harbor and started driving dolphins into a cove. They captured 50-100 dolphins, possibly for export to aquariums.

“Sadly, this isn’t entirely unexpected,” said Ric earlier today from Japan. “This campaign is far from over, and there’s still a lot of work to do in Japan. The good news is we’ve made progress and did garner unprecedented coverage while in Taiji. And at least one media in outlet is reporting that the captured dolphins that are not sold will be returned to the sea. Let’s hope that’s the case. If not, we will find out and report it.”

Ric, Lincoln and the Save Japan Dolphins team are preparing to go back to Japan in the days ahead. They’re intensifying the pressure. TakePart will continue to post updates as we receive them and in the meantime, here are 5 things you can do to help.

  • World Congress on Animal Testing Alternatives

We are seeking a better way.

We are seeking a better way

I just started following the Humane Society on Twitter + stumbled across the fact they’ve just wrapped up this conference [yay them!]:

“From August 30 through September 3, 2009, scientists and others committed to the advancement of alternatives to animal testing and experimentation—including senior staff from Humane Society International and our sister organizations—will gather in Rome, Italy for the Seventh World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences.

The motto for this Congress is “Calling on Science,” a title that emphasizes the fact that scientific advances are the foundation of progress towards the ultimate replacement of animals in safety testing and other types of laboratory experiments. This year marks a number of key milestones and setbacks along the road to replacement, including the 50th anniversary of the book that launched the modern alternatives movement, the second phase of the European Union marketing ban on animal-tested cosmetics, and first wave of testing under the EU’s “REACH” chemicals regulation, which is projected to spell suffering and death for up to 20 million animals.”
