_6th International Conference on the Philosophy of Computer Games_ _29 – 31 January 2012 :: Madrid, Spain :: Abstracts due 1 October 2011_

The call to  submit papers to the 6th International Conference on the Philosophy of Computer Games is now open. The conference theme is The Nature of Player Experience. Over the past decade, the topic of player experience has attracted attention from a multitude of disciplines and practices focusing on computer games. Accepted papers will have a clear focus on philosophy and philosophical issues in relation to computer games and will refer to specific examples from computer games rather than merely invoke them in general terms. Papers should examine the philosophical underpinnings of player experience from a variety of perspectives. Some papers may be accepted for alternative forms of presentation, such as poster sessions, workshops, or demonstrations.  http://2012.gamephilosophy.org

Hi Self Publishers of the world, as you may or not know the library has an exhibition at Salford Art Gallery running from 15th October 2011 to 29th January 2012.

    Pink Mince

    Pink Mince

I am looking to show a film at the exhibition made up of short videos that contributers to the library have made of themselves. The video will explain why you personally self publish and about the zines you produce. To submit please email me your short talking head videos no longer than five minutes. I will compile and edit these together and add captions for the finished film. All are welcome to contribute to this project and I would like an eclectic range of zine makers to participate covering all the genres etc. So wherever you are making your zines it would be great to hear from you.

    Kind regards, Craig

The festival will feature installations and performances from a diverse line-up of renound local, interstate and international experimental sound artists.

Let them help you be the future of sound, it’s in your hands!

    Melbourne, 9-28th August 2011

Special performance by electronic poet and Hmm… festival curator John Jacobs.

    john_jacobs

    john_jacobs

John will be performing his experimental comedy on ridiculous cracked robot toys at KIPL – 136 Roden Street, West Melbourne on Saturday evening 20th August

Trouble magazine says: “John Jacobs has been making different types of electronic music in Sydney since the early 1980’s, from industrial noise through to the dance-floor. Deeply involved in the radical politics and strategies of the Post-Punk subculture, John produced experimental radio on SkidRowRadio, 2JJ and 2SER. At the same time he was engineering for ABC Radio National where he now produces the critically acclaimed Night Air and Pool a site for collaborative arts projects.

Committed as always to the DIY spirit of the counter-culture John believes entirely in the benefits of the hands on magic of improvised circuitry. A certain mystical zeal underpins his work, this zeal extending out to the work of his colleagues. He makes instruments that are art-objects fused with comedy, wonder and irony, many integrating into the bodily electronic circuit of the player themselves.”

  • Making it Handmade screening on ABC2 #subversive #plush #Melbourne #geekgirl

Think craft is for grannies? Think again.

A seditious and subversive subculture is gaining momentum in Melbourne. But rather than wielding megaphones and placards, they’re cross-stitching slogans on hurricane wire and constructing plush female genitalia from craft supplies.

Following four local women who’ve taken a seemingly staid past-time and injected it with a youthful, modern aesthetic, filmmaker Anna Brownfield shows a side of craft more closely aligned with punk DIY culture than with Martha Stewart and ‘home sweet home’ tapestries.

“I wanted to show that craft was no longer daggy but had moved into a new era and was being reclaimed by women who had been brought up as feminists.” – filmmaker Anna Brownfield

    Starring
Pip Lincolne, Gemma Jones, Faythe Levine, Rayna Fahey, Casey Jenkins and the awesome Melbourne craft community

    Sunday, August 14 at 9:30pm – August 15 at 12:30am

In your lounge room with the TV on to ABC2

  • Turing Centenary 2012: Invitation to New Media Artists Call for Expressions #code #geekgirl

    Due 29 July 2011

2012 is the centenary of the birth of Alan Turing, the renowned mathematician, code-breaker and computer pioneer. This will be marked by an extensive series of events, which is being coordinated by the Turing Centenary Advisory Committee. As Turing worked at the University of Manchester for the last six years of his life, Manchester is one of the two main centres of this events programme – the other being London, where he was born.

The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) plans to celebrate the Turing centenary throughout 2012. As Turing was a great innovator, MOSI is keen for its events to feature innovative creative works inspired by Turing and utilising the digital media made possible by the achievements of the early computer pioneers. MOSI invites written expressions of interest in this project which should include a description of the nature of the proposed work, how it links to Turing and the likely hardware requirement.
