Victory for PETA against Lipton tea #animalrights #hooray #geekgirl
More than 40,000 people worldwide took action against the makers of Lipton tea and after representatives from PETA and affiliates in India and Europe flew to London to meet with Unilever–the world’s largest tea maker including the Lipton and PG tips brands–the company has agreed to end all non-required animal testing for their teas and tea-based beverages worldwide.
http://www2.peta.org/site/R?i=vUebjww9v4d26IN3Ad5O2A..
With this victory, the suffering of animals for Lipton and PG tips teas ends. The company behind Lipton tea cut holes into rats’ intestines and fed them tea ingredients through a tube in their throats; infected piglets with E. coli toxin and cut their intestines apart while they were still alive; killed mice by suffocating them and breaking their necks; cut off rabbits’ heads; and conducted other cruel tests that involved tormenting and killing animals simply to study the health effects of its tea products and ingredients. Not one of the experiments that the company conducted was legally required for beverage makers, and regulators have stated that animal tests are not required to prove a health claim about a food or beverage product.
Thanks to all who called, e-mailed, and boycotted Lipton tea products!
Please take a moment to thank Lipton for its prompt and compassionate decision by e-mailing the company using its contact form.

Peno, Sand Pebbles as well as Max Crawdaddy and RRR DJs.
Stephen Walker was Triple R’s Program Manager for 14 years and is in his thirtieth year as a volunteer broadcaster with the station. He was instrumental in shaping the sound of the station during the late 80s and 90s. His on air persona as the Ghost Who Talks in the Skull Cave every Friday between 4 to 7pm established a cult following over three decades. Skull Cave continues to be the one of the most popular programs on the community station’s grid, even moreso now that he has introduced the quiz and interacts with the listeners.
The Ghost is the thinking man’s music guru and beyond the wireless he is a regular internet blogger, contributor to The Age, Rolling Stone and street press publications. Walker has a crystalline mind and remains at the forefront when it comes to discovering new music. He has broad taste and embraces music which pushes the boundaries but continues to idolize Iggy Pop, Lux Interior and Leonard Cohen. He is a true musicologist and tastemaker. Stephen Walker has launched many radio and musical careers, He knows when to trust the energy.
Now it is time for us to give a little back to the Ghost. For the past 20 years Stephen Walker has been living with multiple sclerosis. He has become immobilized and is often stricken by pain. He resides just outside of Melbourne and it is a huge effort for him to go into the Triple R studios in East Brunswick every Friday afternoon. Friends of The Ghost have organised this special benefit concert to help raise funds for an expensive treatment available in Europe which will help him regain some independence and walk again.
A stellar line up of talent on Monday 31 January will come together at the Forum to benefit the Ghost. All proceeds from the show will go towards Stephen Walker’s medical treatment.
Joining the already stellar line up on the night will be the Skull Cave All Stars who will perform some of Stephen’s favorite songs, featuring David Bridie, Peter Lawler (Dr Pump), Gary Young and Phil Wales. They’ll be joined by special guests, Andrew Coates and James Lee from Black Cab, Rob Craw (the Huxton Creepers), Kerri Simpson and the Wolfgramm sisters.
As the Ghost says, “plant you now, dig you later.”
Those unable to attend can contribute to the cause via donations direct to Stephen Walker BSB: 063 002 Account: 1000 9630, or cheque or money order made out to Stephen Walker posted to Stephen Walker C/O Triple R, PO Box 2145, Brunswick East 3057 prior to 31st January 2011.

Swags for the Homeless #Australia #homeless #gifts #geekgirl
I was really impressed to see that finally some worthwhile effort, design, technology and thought had been put into something comfortable, portable and practicle for Homeless people.
With a compelling headline of cardboard box, cement … or dignified backpack. The Swag may yet take on .. and at least serve to create some temporary comfort zone.
The statistics for homeless people are staggering, and as we draw closer to the holiday season perhaps we can all spare buying those expensive and futile gifts and give to people who really need it.

Monday, November 15 at 12:00am – November 22 at 12:00am
Facebook / The Internet / Your Bed / Your Couch
You DO NOT need to physically show up anywhereTHIS IS A WORLDWIDE EVENT ON FACEBOOK/THE INTERNET. You DO NOT need to physically show up anywhere!
Change your profile picture to an image in support of making ANIMAL CRUSH VIDEOS illegal again. This photo does NOT have to be graphic or even one of ours. With HR 5566 being part of lame duck voting sessions which would make these videos BANNED in the US, this is a very important time and event.

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=41551&id=123901460968753What are Crush Videos?
Crush videos feature small live animals, such as kittens, puppies, reptiles, mice and rabbits being slowly tortured in the most horrific ways imaginable; including being burnt alive, cut with pruning sheers, nailed to the floor, skinned alive, beaten, stabbed, and having their limbs broken. All of these videos share a common theme: the animals are incrementally crushed by a woman with high heels/other body parts. Most people view these materials for sexual gratification, but these videos are becoming increasingly popular just for their shock value alone on “gore sites”.

Men of letters hosted by Women of Letters #fundraiser #Melbourne #geekgirl
And now it’s the men’s turn - Men of letters – October 31 at the Thornbury Theatre (Melbourne)
After a whirlwind road trip incorporating four states, 23 letter-writers, and more hastily scribbled postcards than you could poke a Kilometrico at, Women of Letters is moving to its new permanent home at the Thornbury Theatre with a special one-off testosteroney line-up.
On October 31st, co-curators Michaela McGuire and Marieke Hardy will host for the very first time their inaugural all-male Men of Letters, featuring a relatively gasp-inducing range of the country’s finest and most dapper talent. They will go where no man has gone before – into the celebration of the lost art of letter writing.
Singer/songwriter PAUL KELLY, sartorially elegant bandleader DAVE GRANEY, writer/performer JOHN SAFRAN, The Chaser’s CHAS LICCIARDELLO, star of stage and screen EDDIE PERFECT, The Gin Club frontman BEN SALTER, Spicks and Specks’ ALAN BROUGH, troubadour TIM ROGERS, political scribe and author BOB ELLIS and last but not least, Australia’s most decadent food critic MATT PRESTON will each be penning and reading a letter to ‘The Woman Who Changed My Life’.
There’ll be a DJ set by the inestimably lovely EMMA PEEL, wine, and copious amounts of letter writing. Stamps and envelopes will be provided, and in the spirit of participation attendees are encouraged to pen short notes. Men of Letters kicks off at 3.00 pm – doors open at 2.20 pm – and bookings are essential.
For $20 that’s a fairly formidable afternoon’s entertainment. All funds raised to go Edgar’s Mission.
The Thornbury Theatre is at 859 High Street, Thornbury. Tickets – http://www.thethornburytheatre.com

Blog Action Day – Oct 15th #water #bloggers #geekgirl
The topic for Blog Action Day 2010: Water.
The Blog Action Day 2010 site has been unveiled, and it’s aim is to make this year’s event the largest single day of action on the web in 2010. Click here to check out the new site and register for Blog Action Day 2010, held on October 15th.
You don’t need to be a water expert to participate — you just have to be interested in joining thousands of other bloggers from more than 100 countries in collectively raising awareness of one of the most important issues facing our world.
After all, clean water is essential for our survival, but dangerously scarce. Nearly one billion people in the world today don’t have access to clean water and 42,000 people die each week from water-borne diseases. And the issue doesn’t stop there — water availability impacts a wide variety of issues from the environment to women’s rights and from technology to fashion. If you’re unsure what to write about on October 15th, check out our list of water post suggestions to get started.
Last year, Blog Action Day included influential voices ranging from the White House to former Prime Minister Gordon Brown. This year, we’re looking forward to an even larger group of influential voices, from celebrities to politicians, to help widen the scope of conversation.
