Tina Modotti, Hands of the Puppeteer

Tina Modotti - Hands of the Puppeteer - 1929

In the exhibition “TINA MODOTTI – Photographer and Revolutionary”, KUNST HAUS WIEN presents a comprehensive retrospective of a legendary photographer who has still not received the attention she deserves. Tina Modotti, who was born in 1896 in Udine, Italy and died in 1942 in Mexico, was one of the most fascinating women of the 20th century. She became famous as a result of the photographs she created in Mexico in the 1920s and her involvement in the revolutionary movements of her time.

The exhibition traces the path of Tina Modotti’s life, which took her from Italy to California, Mexico, Berlin, Moscow, Paris, Spain and back to Mexico, and acquaints us with the people who were important to her, among them the photographers Edward Weston and Johan Hagemeyer, the author B. Traven and the artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. It also presents other photographers’ impressions of Modotti, who had started out as an actress in silent films, among them one of the most highly priced nude photographs in the history of photography, the image “The White Iris”, made by Edward Weston in 1921.

  • Cherchez la Femme III: Feminism and Sport #melbourne #feminism #geekgirl

    Description
Gear up for the third instalment of Cherchez la Femme: Feminism and Sport. Is the Australian obsession with sport an intractable problem for the feminist project? Is it just institutionalised aggression, bloodlust and body fascism? Or can it be a space in which women take power, channel their own aggression, and feel part of a community? The panel will be made up of athletes, fanatical consumers of sporting coverage, critics of the elite codes, sporting enthusiasts, game-goers and all manner of other feminists for a full and frank appraisal of how women fit in to a discussion about sport and our society.

  • HiGH ViZ Vogue – Bike #Fashion Jam #Melbourne #bicycles

DIY cycling gear workshop to keep the cops and the fashion police happy

    11:00 – 13:00
    Saturday 19 June 2010
    Coburg Library
Cnr Victoria & Louisa Streets, Coburg

Craft Cartel, alarmed by sights of fluoro lycra clad cyclists and equally aghast at the thought of coming a cropper while partaking in our favourite form of transport, are proud to present a solution: High Viz Vogue, a DIY bike fashion workshop.

This event, part of the Moreland City Council Coburg Carnivale, invites members of the public to adapt helmets and other clothing bits they’d like to make roadway and catwalk friendly, or to start from scratch using supplied materials. Local designers Miss Viz will be on hand to provide guidance and there will be displays of innovative bike fashion solutions such as designer Ann Maher’s ‘biker bustle’.

The event will culminate in a fashion parade with prizes supplied by Crumpler and will be followed by a celebratory ride through Moreland to parade the new hip gear led by Sugar Spokes all female bike crew.

“We don’t think riders should have to choose between having a sore body and being an eye-sore,” says Cartel co-founder Casey Jenkins, “You can look hot while you’re cycling and still keep yourself safe, we’re going to show you how.”

Free! No experience necessary! All materials supplied. Ace prizes to be won.

Produced by Ann Maher, Rahne Widarsito & Casey Jenkins

  • ENIAC Programmers Project – Honouring Computer Pioneers and Preserving their Stories #geekgirl

I just read about a cohort of bright young math graduates who wrangled ballistics routines on ENIAC a hulking valve proto computer in 1946. They developed routines and methodologies that helped to lay the foundation for our networked world. You can see a photo of the machine and the women programmers here:

    http://www.eniacprogrammers.org/overview.shtml

They were long regarded as simply models posing in front of the machine, but it is now coming to light that they were actually the programmers, read more here:

  • Japanese #Robot Genius Clones Model – introducing Geminoid F.

Japanese robot maker Hiroshi Ishiguro has unveiled his latest robot: Geminoid F. The robot is a replica of a 20-something woman who’s identity is being kept confidential. The robot is more advanced than the clone Ishiguro made of himself a few years ago, and can make much more convincing facial expressions. Is it even possible to see this without thinking about the 1975 movie, “The Stepford Wives”?

    Our 2nd workshop 2010 – 17 April. Saturday 10:00 – 16:00
Moonah Arts Centre 65 Hopkins St   Moonah TAS 7009

    All info @

Most of us work with computers one way or another processing programmes and surfing the net, but how often does someone not familiar with computers look inside the case and touch things?

After we pull apart the old computer hardware and name it, what then? This workshop is about making accessories with old computer electronics, mobile phones, tape recorders, even kitchen appliances.

Transform these old favourites into trinkets, wearables and all the while learn about computer or machine hardware.

Hardware is a mystery, may seem difficult but is actually a lot of fun. While involved in hand-on demolition and reconstruction learn about masters and slaves, the difference between memory and storage and the components of your computer.

    Workshop involves:
Opening the guts (taking stuff apart
    Fishing for components (choosing trinkets)
Making a wearable, (and even functioning), accessory

    Things to bring:
An object to dismantle (and re-incarnate)
A piece of clothing to modify (optional)
Tools eg drills, screwdrivers, pliers (some will be provided)
