#Animal Smarts, They Haz Them [#geekgirl]
You know when you read an article that reports on information you’ve known for years, and you find yourself sitting smugly going “Well, DUH!?”. Then read on, vainglorious [but infinitely wise] comparative psychologists:
New research shows that we have grossly underestimated both the scope and the scale of animal intelligence. Primatologist Frans de Waal on memory-champ chimps, tool-using elephants and rats capable of empathy.

Oscar’s Law – end Puppy factories
It’s time to end the shameful and cruel treatment of our companion animals, who are suffering on puppy factories and need our help. Oscar’s law is a very simple campaign: it enables everyone to make a stand and tell the Government that “We do not want companion animals factory farmed anymore” and “We no longer want the pet industry to mislead us about what is acceptable for our pets”.
You can help fight the genocide in Australia’s pounds, promote rescue organisations and no kill shelters as the first option to adopting, and change the way Australians gets their pets. Adoption is the intelligent alternative to impulse buying. No puppy factory whether it is “clean”, “model”, “state of the art” or otherwise is the answer for mans best friend.
#Dogs Dressed As Superheroes: Saving The World With Cuteness
Life would much easier if dog superheroes existed. We’re not saying it would be perfect, but we think the world would be a safer place if dogs were out there saving lives (and digging holes with super-canine speed). To bide the time until that day comes, we’ve collected some of the cutest superdogs we could find. We know that some of these aren’t technically superheroes in the classic sense, but c’mon, they’ve got funny costumes on. Now’s not really the time to get nitpicky.

Tweeting Dog Collar Posts Your Dog’s Movements to Twitter
Mattel is about to launch a toy that will brighten the lives of some dog lovers — but act as a sign of the coming apocalypse for folks who aren’t so keen on cute pet gimmicks. It’s called Puppy Tweet, and it gives your dog the ability to send Twitter updates about what he or she is doing.
Well, sort of.
The collar detects when your dog moves or make a sound, then randomly selects one of 500 pre-written tweets to post to Twitter. Your dog has to be within a reasonable distance of the room with your computer in it, though; the tweets are sent wirelessly from the collar to a USB receiver that has to be plugged into a supported Internet-connected device.

Increase the penalty for animal cruelty sign the ongoing petition
This petition has been created to show that Australians support harsher penalties towards scum that hurt and/or torture defenseless and innocent animals, like Buckley (picture above) (VIC) and Peanut (QLD).
The current maximum penalty for animal cruelty in Australia is a pathetic 12 months jail, or a fine. The maximum penalty that has been handed out is 4 months. This matter needs to be taken more seriously, and the penalties need to be increased.
Harming a defenceless animal is like hurting a child, neither can defend themselves.
Please do your part – sign this petition and invite others to do the same.
