The Reason why #Millennials Aren’t Eating #Cereal [#geekgirl]

“I’d like to believe that trends these days towards convenience are good things. We now have phones that give us directions, play our favorite music, and respond to us when we talk to them. We can read countless books on a single device, and we don’t ever have to leave our homes to make purchases. The advancements over the last decade or two have freed up time for us to do more important things with our lives. But perhaps those who have grown up with these conveniences (ahem, millennials…) have gotten a bit too used to convenience in life.

In a recent article for the Washington Post, Roberto A. Ferdman explains why a staggering number of millennials do not eat cereal. It’s not because it has too much sugar or is processed or is otherwise unhealthy. (Those reasons could be considered valid and therefore excusable). The article, which was based on one from the New York Times, points out that “[a]lmost 40 percent of the millennials surveyed by Mintel for its 2015 report said cereal was an inconvenient breakfast choice because they had to clean up after eating it.””

This is not a drop of #water, it’s a #cake [#geekgirl]

Water-Cake-Dessert

‘Mizu Shingen Mochi’ is a new breed of Japanese rice cake that’s bound to get people scratching their heads and wondering what the hell they ordered. Though it might look like a water droplet served fancy, it’s actually a cake that uses water harnessed from the Japanese Alps!

Its makers say it’s like a traditional dessert mocha – sweet, usually sprinkled with kinako soybean powder and partnered with brown sugar syrup – except, you know, this one looks like a water droplet. If that’s not drool-worthy enough for you, the cake even melts in your mouth! Those who have tasted the treat went on Twitter, saying it’s ‘refreshingly cool’ and ‘tasty.

You have limited time to take selfies and food porn photos with it, though. Its consistency only allows it to take form for 30 minutes, before finally disintegrating into plain, old water.

Cognitive dissonance and why we eat meat. Why the world would be nicer if we didn’t. #makepeace [#geekgirl]

Why Don’t We Feel More Guilty About Eating Animals? by Caroline Spence

Source: IFL Science

Editor’s note: This is a great article and very timely. My apologies for the dissection of the full article, but I encourage you to read it in full and in context.

Cognitive dissonance occurs whenever someone holds contradictory beliefs – it can manifest as a range of emotions including anger, embarrassment and guilt. We can see it in people’s desire to smoke despite the significant dangers to their health or in the continuing use of petrol-fuelled cars despite accepting the threat of climate change. To see this conflict first-hand, try reminding the next person you see eating a bacon sandwich of its cute piggy origin.

(sic)

This representation of livestock as dumb allows us to ignore growing evidence that farm animals lead complex mental and emotional lives and avoid modifying our behaviour. We then reinforce this status quo by avoiding anything that may trigger further dissonance, including those pesky vegetarians. Just reading a description of this group of people causes us to increase our disparagement of animals’ mental abilities.

(sic)

Avoiding psychological strife in this way might allow us to continue eating meat, but it also reveals a disturbing link between the devaluing of animals and the dehumanisation of our own kind. Reducing the intelligence and moral worth of people we consider “outsiders” is often linked to discrimination and is understood to be an important mechanism in the lead up to many atrocities in human history.

But just as our awareness of – and attitudes towards – human discrimination have changed, so may our views on the mass farming of animals for food. The lengths we go to to avoid confronting our cognitive dissonance over eating meat suggest it might be wise to re-evaluate how comfortable we are with our current level of consumption.

#GlutenFree #Art #Museum Lets You Enjoy Famous Artworks Without Gluten [#geekgirl]

In one of the weirdest Internet art projects we’ve ever seen, French graphic artist Arthur Coulet has created a Tumblr called the Gluten-Free Museum that removes everything containing gluten from famous classical paintings. Some of the changes are subtle, while others are huge, but they all share one common vision – a world without gluten.
