  • Emma Davis’ new single ‘Machines’ – very cute – you’ll like it! #music #geekgirl

    emma-davis

In the lead up to her debut record, Emma Davis releases ‘Machines’; a stunning track that combines Emma’s rich melodies and natural story‐telling with the humble sound of a Casiotone.

For the last year the London‐born Sydney songwriter has worked with acclaimed troubadour Brian Campeau (Angus and Julia Stone, Melanie Horsnell, Elana Stone, Cuthbert and the Nightwalkers) to piece together a record of her stories and give her sweet melodies and subtle turn of phrase the delicate treatment that they deserve. Over the year, musical friends have piled into Brian’s home-made studio in Newtown to lend their own voices to the stories that were once so personal. It is a record made up of the quiet moments shared between people; stories of awkward conversations, mistaken loves and unfathomable friendships, told with such honesty that you can’t help but see yourself in them.

Machines is a beautiful track which showcases Emma’s gorgeous folky voice, her subtle turn of phrase, and her sweet melodies – alongside the humble sound of the casiotone.

  • Help get Tasmania’s Sarah Heald to One Movement 2010 #music #stargurl #geekgirl #donate

One Movement 2010 is the Asia-Pacific trade expo for Australian recording artists launching into international markets, and Sarah Heald has been fortunate enough as part a graduate of the JB Seed Management Workshop program, to be selected to represent Tasmanian artists for the first time at the conference.

This is an enormous opportunity for Tasmanian musicians who Sarah has already collaborated with in both formal and informal mentorship, management, promotional and advisory roles (such as Charles Du Cane, All Fires The Fire, Rough Skies Records, The Native Cats, The Paradise Motel and White Woods) under the banner of non-profit consultancy “Behind Every Great Management”.

Prior to her Tasmanian seachangeSarah was employed as an in-house PR at Mushroom Distribution Services, Wall of Sound Recordings (UK), and at Best Est PR (Pulp, Blur, Glastonbury webcast). After relocating to beautiful Tasmania in 2005,  she has actively been involved in events such as MONAFOMA, A Day on The Green, Hobart Fringe Festival, and Falls Festival in event coordination roles, as well as volunteering on the board of Hobart Fringe and the young friends of the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery (TMAGgots). Many locals will also recognise her from her work at live music venues, in particular North Hobart’s “The Alley Cat Bar”.

The good folk at JB Seed have provided her with a full conference pass and assistance to the value of nearly $1000, however she needs to arrange her own flights, freight, accommodation and per diems during the event and will also be taking unpaid leave to do so. Subsequentlyshe is relying on the broader community, and some of her volunteer hours ‘kharma’ to help have Tasmanian artists have a real presence for trade and export at One Movement.

    Please donate.

  • Maya Deren’s films screened with experimental live soundtracks #Melbourne #geekgirl

    Eye-MayaDeren

    Eye-MayaDeren

Five of Melbourne’s best experimental acts have organised the opportunity to see them play new soundtracks live to the films of Maya Deren.

Maya Deren was the first lady of avant-garde film making in the 1940′s and 1950′s, not only a filmmaker in her own right but also collaborating with the likes of Marcel Duchamp and Antony Tudor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_Deren Her films are a wonderfully textured and moodily lit black and white and deal with themes such as ritual, movement, violence and beauty.

On 4th September  Occult Blood, Rottuer, Siilt, Electronic Shaman and Abre Ojos will play their own unique soundtracks to her films,
including improvisations between Occult Blood and Rotteur, – Sillt, Electronic Shaman and Abre Ojos.

    The films screened are:

    Occult Blood: At Land
    Rotteur: Ritual in Transfigured Time
Electronic Shaman: Meshes of The Afternoon
    Siilt: Meditation on Violence
Abre Ojos: The Very Eye of Night

    With collaboration performances to:
Witches Cradle and an edited version of Divine Horsemen- The Living
    Gods of Haiti

Occult Blood: noise wall degrading tape loops vocals to resurrect Maya herself http://www.myspace.com/occultblood
Rottuer: Rotteur makes cold, desolate soundscapes, haunted by droning machinery and sparse abstracted electronics. http://www.myspace.com/rotteur
Electronic Shaman: follower of the left hand path delivers resonance from the forgotten tombs of the old ones and stygian vistas of distant worlds http://electronicshaman.com
Siilt: siilt is dusty voltage-controlled atmospheres and loops by s.klein, also of Terminal Sound System (Extreme Music, AU) and HALO
    (Relapse Records, USA). www.antisound.net
Abre Ojos: is improvised sound and vision for dystopian meditation http://abreojos.net
