Peno, Sand Pebbles as well as Max Crawdaddy and RRR DJs.
Stephen Walker was Triple R’s Program Manager for 14 years and is in his thirtieth year as a volunteer broadcaster with the station. He was instrumental in shaping the sound of the station during the late 80s and 90s. His on air persona as the Ghost Who Talks in the Skull Cave every Friday between 4 to 7pm established a cult following over three decades. Skull Cave continues to be the one of the most popular programs on the community station’s grid, even moreso now that he has introduced the quiz and interacts with the listeners.
The Ghost is the thinking man’s music guru and beyond the wireless he is a regular internet blogger, contributor to The Age, Rolling Stone and street press publications. Walker has a crystalline mind and remains at the forefront when it comes to discovering new music. He has broad taste and embraces music which pushes the boundaries but continues to idolize Iggy Pop, Lux Interior and Leonard Cohen. He is a true musicologist and tastemaker. Stephen Walker has launched many radio and musical careers, He knows when to trust the energy.
Now it is time for us to give a little back to the Ghost. For the past 20 years Stephen Walker has been living with multiple sclerosis. He has become immobilized and is often stricken by pain. He resides just outside of Melbourne and it is a huge effort for him to go into the Triple R studios in East Brunswick every Friday afternoon. Friends of The Ghost have organised this special benefit concert to help raise funds for an expensive treatment available in Europe which will help him regain some independence and walk again.
A stellar line up of talent on Monday 31 January will come together at the Forum to benefit the Ghost. All proceeds from the show will go towards Stephen Walker’s medical treatment.
Joining the already stellar line up on the night will be the Skull Cave All Stars who will perform some of Stephen’s favorite songs, featuring David Bridie, Peter Lawler (Dr Pump), Gary Young and Phil Wales. They’ll be joined by special guests, Andrew Coates and James Lee from Black Cab, Rob Craw (the Huxton Creepers), Kerri Simpson and the Wolfgramm sisters.
As the Ghost says, “plant you now, dig you later.”
Those unable to attend can contribute to the cause via donations direct to Stephen Walker BSB: 063 002 Account: 1000 9630, or cheque or money order made out to Stephen Walker posted to Stephen Walker C/O Triple R, PO Box 2145, Brunswick East 3057 prior to 31st January 2011.

Hooked on the Net?
The video game market is big business, worth around 2 billion dollars in Australia last year. The best games draw people into an exciting world where anything is possible; demons are slain, riches are made and worries about the real world left far behind. It’s great entertainment, but for a minority of players and net users who get hooked it can be a disaster. ‘Addicts’ deprived of computer access exhibit rage, distress and even violence. Should video game and internet ‘addiction’ be acknowledged as a recognised clinical condition? Pauline Newman’s documentary examines the scale and depth of this worldwide problem, and the drastic measures that some countries are employing to combat it.

Interview with Garry Seven – Programs Manager of PBS 106.7FM

Geekgirl catches up with popular Melbourne radio personality Garry Seven – Program Manager of PBS 106.7FM.
Q. Tell me something about yourself I wouldn’t know or imagine by listening to you on-air.
A. I pluck my eyebrows and leave the toilet seat down at home – but I’m straight – go figure….
Q. I used to really enjoy your – Smokem if you Gotem show on Triple R. How has the transition been from an on-air presenter at RRR to being Programs Manager of PBS 106.7FM. Do you miss being a cock rock jock?
A. I don’t think the RRR show was all cock rock …. Now I have the option to play a bit more of a variety (Jazz, world, country, blues, spoken word) that maybe I didn’t cover at RRR – it’s Thursdays 5-7pm so tune in and we’ll both find out what happens next…
Q. Do you present any shows for PBS? What exactly do you do?
A. My role as Program Manager is to look after all the people who make programs on air at present and anyone who might have a good idea for a program in the future.
I do host a show Thursdays 5-7pm called FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT – it’s a showcase for the many styles of music that gets played right across the PBS grid.
Q. Will public radio gain support or fade out with new technologies. What is the future of radio?
A. Video was supposed to kill the radio star so they say and yet radio is still here!
Community Radio will survive for sure- it has endured through the advent of TV, computers and other forms of entertainment already- it’s a place where you can not only enjoy and learn about music but it helps the community it serves with events and information ongoing.
Digital radio is not to be feared- it just means that more people globally will have access to PBS – which is a good thing.
Q. What does PBS offer that other stations don’t?
A. PBS has a focus on music- Music first and talk second. I believe we have a greater diversity of music than any other radio station around.
Q. In terms of getting on-air what kind of commitment do people need to have and how long is the average wait for a show.
A. To get a show you need training, a good idea, a deep love of music and a sense of commitment. It’s really up to each individual how much time they want to devote to it and therefore how quickly it may take to have a regular program.
Q. How does PBS intend to spend the monies raised from the radio festival and how will this impact on you as programs manager.
A. The money from the Radio Festival goes towards covering costs of the day to day running of the station…I may be able to get some more post it notes or new pens though…If I’m lucky.
Q. Who are five of your favourite bands and why?
A. Ok always a hard thing to choose just 5 but I’ll try…
5. James Brown – you always feel better after hearing the Godfather’s dynamite funk sound.
4. Hank Williams- the father of country music, one of the best songwriter’s of all time and a pioneer of song form and using simple lyrics to discuss the complicated human condition.
3. Mr. Bungle – Madness, death metal, circus music, beats and sweet melodies all rolled into one amazing band of near virtuosos. Not for the faint hearted but well worth the acquired taste.
2. The Beatles- No band travelled further or had more influence. From mop top pop to psychedelia and more. I can’t believe there was only four of them!
1. The King. John Lennon said “ Before Elvis, there was nothing” and whilst I’m not sure that is 100% correct..I think I can relate. When I first heard Elvis as a small boy it was the most exciting music I had ever heard. Young Elvis was dangerous, older Elvis was sublime- that voice is the best!
Long live the King!PBS Radio Festival – May 18 – 31

Ballad of a Young Married Man by The Wildes
Here are four lads from Melbourne who share a common like for the realistic, darker end of music – Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, Hank Williams, Nick Cave. You get the idea. The marriage of country music and tales of loss, revenge and heartbreak aren’t new, but this album brings with it a refreshing glimpse into a wider casting of the net across the genre of country. Oh, there is one happier song about unrequited love on album.

If you never liked Billy Bob Thornton (The Cosmic Cowboy) you’ll like him less after seeing this!
Looking serious from the start of the interview with his band Box Masters during a CBC interview, Billy Bob Thornton made his annoyance known as he initially remained silent despite getting asked direct questions, later gave unenthusiastic answers, and then ended with an angry flash at his film background getting referred to. The host of the show Jian Ghomeshi spoke to RadarOnline.com about his now infamous exchange with Thornton.
“People that have seen the video think he’s an obstinate and pompous guy,” Ghomeshi said. “I didn’t think he was spaced out or drugged up. That’s not the impression that I got. It was morning- but from the get-go he was belligerent.”
