On 5th April Background Briefing, Radio National, discusses new opportunities for progressives and the centre-left at a time of crisis of confidence in free markets and unregulated capitalism.
In the UK, conservative policies are like the nanny manifesto, in the UK Obama sounds like a modern Roosevelt. Here, Kevin Rudd is pragmatic and super cautious, and Abbott says the Liberals shouldn’t have relied so much on magic pudding economics. Whither politics? Reporter Andrew West.
Be sure and tune in on Sunday 5/4 at 9.00am – repeated Tuesday 7/4 at 7pm.

SYN is seeking young artists to submit their ideas…
SYN is seeking young artists to submit their ideas to make our radio studios come to life!
Youth community media organisation SYN Media just turned 6 years old. We’re producing youth radio 24/7 as well as two TV programs and heaps of online content and, though we might not like to admit it, our physical spaces are looking a little rough around the edges.
It’s time for a facelift!
We’re opening the hefty task of livening up the SYN studios to our audience and members by asking them to design a mural for our radio studio wall.
Artists between the ages of 12 and 25 are encouraged to submit designs for the wall of SYN’s radio studios in Melbourne.
The competition is open from 9am February 15th to 6pm March 15th and designs will be shortlisted and then voted on by the people that count – SYN broadcasters.
All paints and supplies will be provided for the execution of the mural and the chosen designer will receive a $150 Obese Records gift voucher to spend on new paints or new tunes.
For competition regulations and the info about the dimensions of the studio wall, artists should email info@syn.org.au

eleveneleven experimental radio
Guest programmer – #15 Carolyn Teo brought to you by Plum Industries.
Carolyn Teo (aka Wun Thong) is an artist from Sydney, Australia, who works across media in photography, video, sound, textiles, performance and d.i.y electronics. Currently exploring the city of Montréal and enduring one of the coldest winters in the world, yet discovering a city abundant in culture and creativity. The D.I.Y approach in Montréal allows for creative freedom and expression which nurtures a healthy arts community. Healthy in the sense that artists self release CD’s that come to be works of art, each CD feels personalized and one of a kind.
This month’s “xmas special” is a collection of self released and independent experimental artists from Montréal, Canada.

What exactly was Beaujolais-in-a-can?
RADIO NATIONAL PROGRAMS: POSSIBLE FAKES
Reviewing Scope: the Lost Episodes
Barry Mortlock Anthony
Sunday, December 21, 2008
8:35pm – 10:00pm
ABC Radio NationalIt was one of ABC radio’s longest running shows, lasting from the late 1950s up to 1976 with a finely honed mixture of satire and social comment. It took opinionated and humorous swipes at burning issues of the times like alienation, spiritual enlightenment, and Beaujolais in a can.
It was called Scope and Barry Mortlock Anthony loved working on it even though he was just a ‘junior trouser’ (young producer) when he joined the ABC in 1964.
The discovery of episodes of Scope previously thought lost has aroused debate about their authenticity. Although some experts believe two of the episodes may have been mocked up in the late ’80s, Barry Anthony is convinced they’re all genuine. “It’s a bit of a schemozzle really. But we did far worse in our day,” laughs Barry. “Some might recall our moon landing show from ’69, for instance!”
The 6-part series ‘Reviewing Scope: The Lost Episodes’ hosted by Barry Mortlock Anthony begins on The Night Air, Sunday, December 21 at 8.35pm on ABC Radio National.
