BarCamp Sydney #5 – The Recession Edition for Geeks
BarCamp Sydney is on again and it’s been dubbed the Recession Edition. In keeping with the Recession theme of BarCamp there are a few changes. Like a new venue, at the Australian Technology Park (ATP) Innovations Centre.
Constantly looking for ideas, we open us discussion in The Think Tank room - a small room with no projector and no tech – just enough room for a small group of people discussing ideas. And what better ideas to discuss than ideas about the future.
More detailed information to come but check out the website and stay informed and block out Saturday June 27 for BarCamp Sydney and put your thinking hats on to present a ripper of a session.

AussieChix microconference in Sydney and Melbourne:October 25, 2008
AussieChix aims to help women in the Australian Free Software community participate in the wider community, and one of the ways we’d like to do so is to give women more speaking experience and confidence. Therefore, we have organised an informal speaking event for October 2008: an AussieChix microconference.
== Date and time ==
Saturday October 25, 2008, from 10:30am to 5:00pm. Dinner will follow the event in both locations, details will be announced later.
== Location ==
The microconference will be hosted by Google Australia in Sydney and Melbourne, with a video conference link-up between the two.
Sydney location: Tower 1, Darling Park, 201 Sussex St, Sydney
Melbourne location: Rialto South Tower, Level 27, 525 Collins Street, Melbourne
== Attendance ==
Admission is free. Please register for the event at
http://conf.au.linuxchix.org/register-microconference
Attendance at the event is limited by venue capacity. Please note that if we aren’t able to accommodate everyone, we will give preference to female attendees, particularly to those willing to speak or volunteer at the event. Should this be the case, we will notify you at least one week before the event.
== Event details ==
All attendees are encouraged to consider speaking at this event. Attendees will have the opportunity to put their names down for half-hour talks, fifteen minute talks, and five minute “lightning talks”.
Presenters are free to use PDF, OpenOffice or similar presentation tools (projection facilities will be provided) or to speak extemporaneously. Attendees are asked to observe the LinuxChix code at this event: be polite, be helpful.

Social Media Club
Company Overview: Social Media Club brings together journalists, publishers, communications professionals, artists, amateur media creators, citizen journalists, teachers, students, tool makers, and other interested collaboraters. Essentially the people who create and consume media who have an interest in seeing the ‘media industry’ evolve for everyone’s benefit. We are more than just USERS, we are the reason the tools exist – we are the people who communicate our thoughts and ideas near and far. Join us and let’s shape the future together!
Social Media. This is a global conversation amongst a diverse community of practitioners where the many different people who care about social media can come together to discover, connect, share, and learn.
The idea for Social Media Club originated in the Fall of 2005 with the Web 2point1 BrainJam. This led us to create the non-profit BrainJams organization to promote the idea of unconferences and ad-hoc collaboration to a broader audience of non-geeks. Over the course of the last year, BrainJams has brought us together with people from all over the world. As a result of thousands of conversations since, we realized that the passion we have for Social Media was the real purpose of what we were doing and have now launched this site to begin the conversation about the future of Social Media.

Web2Open
April 22-25, 2008
South Park, San Fransisco
Web2Open is the “unconference,” where anyone with a Web 2.0 Expo badge can share knowledge and join in open discussions with the community at large in three different ways:
Simply schedule your topic, show up, and lead the discussion. These can be scheduled onsite.
- Pre-Scheduled Roundtables: Join an open conversation with a panel of community members scheduled in advance.
- BoFs (Birds of a Feather sessions): Informal group sessions focused on a particular topic that’s been suggested by the attendees. The difference between the BoFs and the Open sessions is that the BoFs gatherings are more loose—some are after-hours—and often don’t have a discussion leader. BoFs may be scheduled in advance or onsite.
