Eclectrc Panoptic teases back layers of cognition, reflecting New Zealand born artist Johnson’s interest in science fiction, alternative universes and the slippery nature of perception and reality.
Comprised of a suite of drawings, tessellating patterns and virtual reality technology, the exhibition becomes a bridging portal into another realm. The installation takes its genesis from the psychomagic group rituals conceived by the visionary filmmaker and comic book writer Alejandro Jodorowsky; and the technological themes of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel ‘Dune’. Concealed within the space is ‘Ixian Gate’, a virtual reality artwork that can only be experienced through an Oculus Rift headset, plunging participants into the dystopic world of her drawings.

Spontaneous Fantasia is a live immersive reality musical experience. This astounding digital work is performed by pioneering multimedia artist J-Walt. He uses the latest in interactive computer graphics techniques to bring paintings to life. J-Walt will create entire worlds in the 360 degree dome space of the Melbourne Planetarium.
J-Walt has performed Spontaneous Fantasia throughout the world including Canada, USA, Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, India, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and Argentina. This will be the very first time he has brought his show to Australia.

Apple just confirmed acquisition of German company Metaio, which as the Journal reports, has developed augmented reality technology that enables “people wearing Google Glass-like eyewear to make any real world surface into a virtual touch screen.” This purchase assures Apple’s entrance into the virtual/augmented reality industry, a space we’ve been following closely over the last few years. Now just about all the world’s largest high-tech/Internet companies are active in virtual reality:

(sic) VR failed to go mass market durings it first vogue in the 90s, and then failed again ten years later after the buzz around Second Life and other virtual worlds fizzled out. So we’re watching closely to see how well this new wave of VR tech fares over the next few years.
