Flash mob Newcastle : Rising Tide

Flash mob: “a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, then quickly disperse.” (Wikipedia)

Check out this flash mob in the UK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwMj3PJDxuo

Flash mobs have been popular in cities all around the world, and this flash mob is happening a few days before one in Sydney (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=19364101135).

Our message is “Freeze Emissions Growth” – if we can get it right before Copenhagen in November 2009, then we still have a chance of avoiding runaway climate change!

—-THE PLAN—-

We will all meet together in Pacific Park (near the Joy Cummings Centre) on Saturday June 21 at 12:00, and agree on a location to do the flash mob. At 12:30 we should all be in the agreed location. At 12:40 we all freeze in interesting and unusual poses. At 12:45 we all unfreeze and head off. Anybody who wants to can meet up at Pacific park at 1pm.

Feel free to bring banners saying “Freeze Emissions Growth” or something similar, or bring flyers, t-shirts etc. Make sure that the banners don’t compromise your freeze!

If we plan this well we could get at least 1,000 people there!

If you get invited to this event please invite all of your friends, and pass the message on by Facebook, email, mobile phone etc.

If you find this event inspiring check out the Camp for Climate Action at http://www.climatecamp.org.au/

Controlled chaos – Ian Curtis’ influences.

From Dostoevsky to Burroughs to pulp sci-fi, Ian Curtis devoured offbeat literature. Jon Savage, writer of a new film about Joy Division, explores the impact of the front man’s reading on the band’s lyrics.

In March 1980, Joy Division released their third single, featuring the songs “Atmosphere” and  “Dead Souls”. Published in a limited edition of 1,578 on an independent French label, Sordide Sentimental, this was no ordinary record. Carrying a “warning” of one word – gesamtkunstwerke – it was, indeed, a total artwork comprising graphics, music, photographs and text, a world unto itself.

On the cover of the fold-out was a painting by neoclassical artist Jean-François Jamoul, picturing a robed hermit looking out over mountain tops, the valleys obscured by clouds. Inside was a collage of a lone figure descending into the depths of the earth, with Anton Corbijn’s photo of Joy Division under strip lighting in Lancaster Gate station. And then there was the text.

In the essay entitled “Licht und Blindheit” (light and blindness), Jean-Pierre Turmel positioned himself as far away from rock crit cliché as possible. Citing Pascal, Heinrich von Kleist and Georges Bataille among others, he went in deep in his attempt to explain the effect that Joy Division had on him:

“At the heart of daily punishment and sufferings, in the very wheels of encroaching mediocrity, are found both the keys and the doors to inner worlds.”

Petition against Melbourne drinkers 2am ban

On Friday the 30th of May at 5:00pm, we invite you and everyone who cares about Melbourne’s unique culture and nightlife to put on a WHITE T-SHIRT & converge on Parliament House steps.

We are putting forward an educated attack on the State government in the form of a registered protest, backed by Melbourne’s nightlife community. This means that we are working with the Victorian Police to ensure safety and maximum exposure.

We are working to voice your opinions and thoughts. If you have any Ideas, comments or arguments on the matter please put them in the wall. We read every comment and we will use them as ammunition against the proposed curfew.

This is a formal, non-violent, drug and alcohol free protest: violence, vandalism, and stupidity will not be tolerated! Any negative press will discredit our protest and will hurt the very cause we are fighting for.

Bring: A white T-Shirt, signs, noise makers (drums, maracas etc) and your Melbourne spirit.

Do not bring: alcohol, drugs, idiotic behaviour, violence or weapons of any sort. This will result in you being removed from the protest by the Victorian Police, and we will fully support them in doing this.

For more information: http://www.melbournelockedout.com

To get involved in the organisation of this protest please email the event organisers, as there are plenty of small and large ways you can help: contact@melbournelockedout.com

This is not a drill.
