Bourgeois, the Great

LONDON- Her exceptional longevity brings her close to creators such as Manoel de Oliveira or Mario Monicelli, comfortably in their nineties. Over 95 years old, the «grande dame indigne» of contemporary art is still around. The exhibition at the Tate Modern has the ambition of presenting all of her very varied work, influenced by the Surrealists as well as by Léger (who was her teacher), by conceptual art as well as by feminist, committed art. Though born in France in 1911, Louise Bourgeois developed most of her career in the USA, where she settled right before World War II. She is the object of a true cult, especially after the retrospective in 1982 at the MoMA, one of the first dedicated to a woman artist. From her monumental metal sculptures (such as the giant spider that inaugurated the same Tate Modern in 2000) to her drawings, from the installations to the sexual compositions in latex or in dolls, Louise Bourgeois’ repertoir defies all classification. This presentation, meant to travel throughout the world and in particular the USA (Centre Pompidou, Guggenheim New York, Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art, Hirshhorn Museum) aims in a way at being the definite retrospective, with 200 works of which the most recent are in material.

LEONARDO ART AND CLIMATE PROJECT

LEONARDO ART AND CLIMATE PROJECT CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The Leonardo Lovely Weather Art and Climate Project and Leonardo Publications are inviting papers that deal with artistic approaches to weather, climate and their modifications. As a result of massive urbanization and the development of the modern lifestyle, it has been possible to observe a deterioration of sensitivity to meteorology and climate. The existence of weather and climate is similar to that of landscape, which does not exist in nature without the mind to perceive it as such. The perception of weather and climate, as well as that of landscape is the perception of an arrangement, a configuration of the real. Weather and climate are thus multidimensional phenomena that include the combined contributions of nature, culture, history and geography, but also the imaginary and the symbolic. Art could help us to question our perceptions and relationships to weather, climate and their changes. Leonardo seeks to document the works of artists, researchers, and scholars involved in the exploration of weather and climate, and is soliciting texts for Leonardo, Leonardo Transactions, special issue proposals for the Leonardo Electronic Almanac and book proposals for the Leonardo Book Series.

LOOP: NEW AUSTRALIAN VIDEO ART

Loop: new Australian video art showcases innovative contemporary video art by five of Australia’s leading artists, including Daniel Crooks, Shaun Gladwell, Jess MacNeil, Arlo Mountford and Daniel von Sturmer. Testing the boundaries of this visual medium, the works in Loop present a spliced meditation on time, space, motion, place and perspective. Curated by Daniel McOwan, the Director of Hamilton Art Gallery, Loop is a NETS Victoria touring exhibition that provides regional audiences with the unique opportunity to access and engage with contemporary video art, which is rarely presented outside of metropolitan art spaces. Georgia Cribb, Director of National Exhibitions Touring Support (NETS) Victoria said, “This special touring exhibition extends beyond the familiar screen-based experience and presents some of the best contemporary Australian video art that will appeal to a wide audience. “In bringing together this group of seemingly diverse artists, is intended to provide a glimpse into some of the fresh methods being employed in video art today. Combined with a scientific-like fascination with the medium of technology, these inspired works display a poetic and hybrid form of video,” Cribb explained. Loop: new Australian video art will be launched at Hamilton Art Gallery on 18 September and will then travel to five other venues across regional Victoria before concluding in April 2009.
