[Via inhabitat.com] “Kodjo Afate Gnikou, a resourceful inventor from Togo in West Africa, has made a $100 3D printer which he constructed from parts he scrounged from broken scanners, computers, printers and other e-waste. The fully functional DIY printer cost a fraction of those currently on the market, and saves environmentally damaging waste from reaching landfill sites.”

SymbioticA Symposium :: Unruly Ecologies

SymbioticA Symposium :: Unruly Ecologies 26 – 28 November 2010 :: Perth & Mandurah, Australia

The ecology of biodiversity is based upon an uncertain definition, incomplete statistics and the need to act in a world without balance. While multiple flora and fauna databases have been established and are being coordinated, there is an urgent need to engage even more proactively with complex ecosystems and human responses. Artists, scientists, humanities scholars and conservationists will come together to talk of the matters of concern around the potentials and futures of biodiversity.

Building Online Games To Save Nature

Geekgirlers: meet Pawan Maulik. Maulik is a game developer and reviewer on the Boom Town UK who actually cares about the state of the natural world. As a fresh 2008 Toy and Game Design graduate from the Ahmedabad National Institute of Design, Maulik found:

“…that people did not like to read pamphlets or literature about social messages on environment. I was looking for some way to make these things interesting for the younger generation. It was then that I started exploring the medium of online games and spreading social messages through them…The games that are under development right now are on global warming, tree plantation, power consumption, renewable energy and water conservation. The games would go into the public forum and be accessible in a couple of months. I am waiting for funding and as soon as it is through, these games will be available on already existing online gaming websites.”

SymbioticA: Call for Expressions of Interest

Expressions of Interest are being sought across all art forms to undertake residencies as part of SymbioticA’s art and ecology project:  Adaptation. Lake Clifton, situated in one of the fastest growing Australian regional cities is home of one of the last remaining colonies of the very slow growing Thrombolites (or ‘living rocks’).  Adaptation presents an exceptional opportunity for artists to engage with a number of potential narratives.
