You may have already read or heard about Rocky, a big red kangaroo who’s life is spent performing with a clown who goads him into boxing, but then is pulled back by a harness and tether.  It is truly saddening to see these magnificent animals being reduced to a side show spectacle.  If you don’t know about Rocky’s story please visit the story.

Stop Iceland’s #whale hunt – Act Now!

Iceland’s whaling season began recently, kicking off a bloody whale hunt that could lead to the death of 100 minke whales.

Iceland is one of only two countries (the other Japan) worldwide that still authorizes commercial whaling. About half of the whale meat from this year’s hunt is intended for domestic sales in Iceland, while the rest of the quota will be sold to Japan.

Sign the petition and tell the Icelandic government to reduce this year’s whale hunt quotas immediately – and to ban whaling forever.

Petition to ban duck shooting in Victoria

Our waterbirds are relying on us. Victorian native waterbird numbers have dropped 60% since 2007 and 2008 (when their numbers were already low). 87% of Victorians want the recreational shooting of native waterbirds banned (Morgan Poll, Oct. 2007), and one in four birds fly away wounded. Drought, global warming and climate change means the recreational shooting of native waterbirds is now unsustainable.

The Coalition Against Duck Shooting is seeking your support through a petition. This PETITION TO BAN DUCK SHOOTING requests that the Legislative Assembly of Victoria follows the Labor governments of WA, NSW and Queensland and permanently bans the recreational shooting of Australian native waterbirds in Victoria.

Lynn at CADS says most vets agree to the petition being displayed on their consulting room counters, so it would be great if you could take a few copies to your nearby vet clinics and ask the receptionist to post them back to us when the pages are filled – and to photocopy the extra copy as required.

This is another very important tactic to help end the barbaric practice of shooting native waterbirds purely for fun. WA, NSW and Queensland have already banned it – now Victoria must do so too.

A very cool widget has been created to help raise awareness of the plight of dolphins in Japan. Each September the killing season begins and the quiet coastal town of Taiji, Japan hides a terrible secret. With more than 20,000 dolphins slaughtered each year The Cove Movie documents the massacre of dolphins. It also reveals that the Japanese people are unaware  they are eating dolphin ‘meat’ which contains high levels of mercury.

Increase the penalty for animal cruelty sign the ongoing petition

This petition has been created to show that Australians support harsher penalties towards scum that hurt and/or torture defenseless and innocent animals, like Buckley (picture above) (VIC) and Peanut (QLD).

The current maximum penalty for animal cruelty in Australia is a pathetic 12 months jail, or a fine. The maximum penalty that has been handed out is 4 months. This matter needs to be taken more seriously, and the penalties need to be increased.

Harming a defenceless animal is like hurting a child, neither can defend themselves.
