***SPACE LIMITED RSVP REQUIRED***

Tuesday, October 14th, 2:00pm-3:00pm, IRMACS Theatre, Room 10905, Applied Sciences Building, SFU Burnaby

Name five well-known scientists. Now name five famous TV scientists. And now, count how of many of those are women… As a scientist and a science communicator, I’ve explored the role of women in STEM from multiple perspectives and, while things are certainly improving, there’s still far to go. In this talk, I’ll cover some of my own observations about women in science and science media, and we’ll examine some practical and easy actions we can all take to help promote the visibility of women in STEM.”

“Oregon counties ban cultivation of GMO crops…” [#geekgirl]

[Reported by GT] “Despite the flood of corporate money poured into two small Oregon counties, local residents voted on Tuesday to ban genetically engineered crops from being planted within their borders.

Although Jackson County itself is home to less than 120,000 registered voters, the measure to ban genetically modified crops (GMOs) made headlines around the nation when it was revealed that large biotech companies like Monsanto were pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into the area in order to affect the vote’s outcome.”

[As reported by The University of Washington] “Scientists have discovered a second code hiding within DNA. This second code contains information that changes how scientists read the instructions contained in DNA and interpret mutations to make sense of health and disease.

Genome scientist Dr. John Stamatoyannopoulos led a team that discovered a second code hidden in DNA.A research team led by Dr. John Stamatoyannopoulos, University of Washington associate professor of genome sciences and of medicine, made the discovery. The findings are reported in the Dec. 13 issue of Science.”
