Wow,Im glad to read and refresh the memory of Vali as her spirit has had a profound effect on me,still now as fresh even after she has left her pysical form. Viva the magik she has aknowledged and touched in us all.I have danced with Vali in a melbourne african dance club and sat with her in the studio. She reminds me to be genuine and brave for a quality life..I will never forget. My artistic hands and heart was strenthened by Vali because finally someone who just lived it!Not this study shit and grandiose notions of ones self.

Valli

Tattooed
a micro-universe of wonder etched
all over your Goddess form.
Wayward adult-child,
'tame' was your distained
4 lettered word

Gypsy, dream weaver,
ecstatic dancer, romancer
of wild things, dark-crystal
enchantress of a restless generation
whose tempest was the archaic way

No nonsense loner
You skirted around
the edge of a sub-culture
who adopted and celebrated you
as 'wizened she-wolf of bohemia'

i was the one who felt freakish
around you [a little too much like
the sweet-hearted Aunty for me!]

You confided that you adored
the warm sensual grooves
of Cuban music and it made
me wonder if you danced
at all like you painted

Your companion foxes
immortalised in ink
still roam my imagination
wild and free
as ever.

I met Vali in the late 90's, during an exhibition of her work at a gallery in South Melbourne.
She was diminutive, by nature a little retiring, though open and friendly to strangers such as i. I could somehow feel that in her heart she'd rather be with her animal friends. No games, no fuss.

She had none of that proud peacock thing about her, inspite being badgered constantly by all sorts of people wanting a piece of her. Vali was a genuine earth mother, intelligent, gentle & highly perceptive. After discovering that one of my passions was music, she confided that she adored Cuban rhythms. In my imagination i am sure she painted like she danced. She lived in a sensual world for sure.

Well, God bless her fine spirit, as she blessed the lives of those that aspire for personal freedom and revelation, to live a life 'dancing with your muse', whatever it be. - dj

I visited her a few times in her Swanston street studio and she always had time to talk. She seemed to have this extraordinary power to draw out the truth in people ... the true essence of their being. She nearly brought me to tears once when I shared a personal epiphany I was going through at the time and she said "You just be careful you don't let that energy take you to the wrong places." She was a very kind 'oracle' and I regret not getting to know her better. You are such a lucky person to have been so close. I miss her.
