FLIP FLOP FLYIN’

A fun website by artist Craig Robinson, which is best described in his own words – “Here’s a brief intro that might help you find your way around [the site]. So, where does one begin? Well, it depends on your needs. If you require a quick bit of ooh-ing and aah-ing, it’s probably a good idea to go the Minipops section. This is the most famous part of FFF, the part that’s had lots of stuff written about it in magazines and newspapers around the world. It’s basically some pictures of famous people drawn really small. It doesn’t sound too impressive, huh, but people seem to like it. Another good place to begin is Fun Fun Fun, which works on the same tiny scale. This section presents possible ways for you to have some fun. If you like all the stuff and need more, maybe you should sign up for the newsletter, which kinda delivers more stuff, but directly into your inbox at vague intervals.”

COOL MEDIA HOT TALK SHOW

“Cool Media Hot Talk Show” is a series of do-it-yourself interactive talk shows, where the public proposes and selects the topics, speakers, questions, and determines the final scenarios of the show, using the project interface on the internet. The live show that results from this public selection takes place at De Balie – Center for Culture and Politics in Amsterdam, and is streamed live via the internet. The public can participate in the live event either by using the web interface or mobile phones: submit and select immediate questions and comments, evaluate speakers’ performance. The system is fully automated: The selection process of proposals and the decision making is based on direct voting by participants.

One of the current topics is “New Media Art Subsidies and Alternative Support Models”.

Diabetes, a Complex of Causes

An explosion of new research is vastly changing scientists’ understanding of diabetes and giving new clues about how to attack it.The fifth leading killer of Americans, with 73,000 deaths a year, diabetes is a disease in which the body’s failure to regulate glucose, or blood sugar, can lead to serious and even fatal complications. Until very recently, the regulation of glucose — how much sugar is present in a person’s blood, how much is taken up by cells for fuel, and how much is released from energy stores — was regarded as a conversation between a few key players: the pancreas, the liver, muscle and fat.
