A new analysis explains why different cities’ road networks look similar [Â] uncovering the relationship may help predict urban sprawl.
Next time you are lost in an unfamiliar city, console yourself with the knowledge that the layout of its roads are probably much the same as in any other.
French and US physicists have shown that the road networks in cities evolve driven by a simple universal mechanism despite significant cultural and historical differences. The resulting patterns are much like the veins of a leaf.

We are a band – Divine Mechanism – who have just released our first chillout/ambient album which is now in stores and on iTunes. So far, we have been played on radio in Melbourne, Perth and Canberra and will be featured on Qantas Radio in coming months. A director/producer has approached us to use our song Vocalise in an international rock-climbing DVD release in July with an anticipated circulation of 30,000 – 50,000. In the Extras section our song will be featured with a video clip which we don’t have at the moment! Unfortunately we don’t have any extra money to pay anyone at the moment (we really wish we did) but what we can offer is exposure and full credit on the clip and on our webpage. With your permission we could also explore other avenues for exposure for the clip nd yourself. The turnaround would be within 1 – 2 months – we realise this is a huge ask.
We believe the clip ought to be nature based to fit in with the DVD’s rock-climbing theme but it could be anything really – all ideas welcome! The song is Vocalise (5min 53sec) and can be listened at

If you are interested please send a cover letter, ideas and some info about yourself (resume is ok too) to Trevor. Students are encouraged to apply.
