Unfolding Florence
Wasn’t quite sure what to make of this film when I first saw it last year at the Film Festival. I know it’s considered unthinkable to demean the work of Gillian Armstrong (who don’t get me wrong) is a fantastic film maker. I just thought the story of Florence Broadhurst was enough without all the multimedia bricolage. Oh well decide for yourself, I guess. Btw not sure why it’s being touted as a seniors’ cinema event, but Melbourne is decidedly shawl weather atm.
Born into a farming family in 1899, Florence Broadhurst had a flamboyant taste for re-invention.
From her Flapper days in Shanghai to her evolution into the doyenne of Australian wallpaper design, her life was marked by an unshakeable self-belief and a steely resolve.
Gillian Armstrong makes use of dramatic re-enactments (with Judi Farr in superb form as Broadhurst) and revealing interviews to assemble a fascinating portrait of a spirited and enigmatic woman.
