NPG:Animated

The National Portrait Gallery (NPG) has boldly entered the world of online exhibiting with the launch of Animated, an online collection of self portraits by fourteen Australian artists.

Animated is not a conventional portraiture show. The images and sounds in the exhibition range from stop-motion to computer generated imagery, greatly extending the possibilities of the genre beyond its traditional form.

The animated self portraits record an emotional and a physical likeness of the artist as well as giving the online audience an insight into how each artist views themselves.

The artists are Jo Boag, Pia Borg, Rick Bull, The Contextual Villains, Susan Danta, Paul Oslo Davis, Jonathan Daw, Anita Fontaine, Ian Haig, Troy Innocent, Anthony Lucas, Matt Taylor, Arlene TextaQueen and Tony Thorne.

Such a diverse pool of talent ensures that Animated covers a wide range of styles and techniques and we can compare the approach of the up-and-coming, the long established industry professionals, the visual artists and film animators, including the Oscar nominated Anthony Lucas.

Animated was launched on Friday Ocober 26.
