RING THE BELLS AT BIRRARUNG MARR

A website has been launched by the city of Melbourne that enables anyone in the world to compose and upload music for the Federation Bells at Birrarung Marr.

The iconic bells are a permanent art installation that comprise of 39 upturned bells that are chimed by computer-controlled hammers. The hammers are controlled by musical software which can now be programmed by anyone who has internet access!

Website users simply drag and drop individual bells onto a timeline, playback, and adjust the melody accordingly. For the more musically-minded, there is also detailed information on the tuning of the bells, and the ability to work with multiple tracks.

Student from RMIT’s Technology, Composition and Perception course have already uploaded 15 original musical  compositions. These works have been composed specifically for the bells.
