Taliban country – Melbourne screening

Film screening: 7pm, Wed 27 August Bar 303 (303 High Street, Northcote, Melbourne)

Featuring special guest: Documentary director, Carmela Baranowska, who will be introducing the film and be available for a question and answer discussion after the screening.

This Walkley Award winning documentary, Taliban Country, is a disturbing expose of American actions in Afghanistan. Australian journalist Carmela Baranowska spent three weeks embedded with the Marines. Frustrated by access limitations, Baranowska left the US troops and returned to the Oruzgon Province independently and in secret, accompanied only by a driver, a translator and two armed policeman. During this part of her trip she lost contact with her colleagues in Australia and was reported missing.

The result is a shocking documentary detailing human right violations at the hands of US soldiers, in an area of Afghanistan where Australian troops are now stationed. The report prompted a US enquiry.

‘BIG DEAL’ an interactive theatrical experience

‘BIG DEAL’ BONDI PAVILLION starts AUGUST 27

Big Deal is a raw, rich, edgy and interactive theatrical experience that treats the underbelly of life with the humour of the darkest Belgium chocolate. Big Deal will be staged at the Bondi Pavillion for two weeks in late August – early September.

‘Big Deal’ will engross viewers from the opening scene. Who the f**K wants to be an accountant when you can be a DJ, or better still, a drug dealer.

This is a world in which addictions are fashionable and temptation is omnipresent. Revolving around themes of drugs, prostitution and corruption, the play offers a brutally honest look into the human psyche.

Big Deal is a hilarious snapshot of six quirky and unconventional party people living in Bondi whose lives intersect jarringly – brought together by their mutual addictions and disconnection with society.
Trying to make sense of the world is their biggest challenge, a challenge made even bigger by their distorted realities as a result of illicit drug taking.

The main character, Dealer, endeavours to re-enter mainstream society and overcome a number of obstacles. Through this character, playwright Ian Leete provides a glimpse into Sydney’s alternate sub-cultures.

The play breaks through a black and white view of society and reveals the shades of grey of Sydney’s drug world, addressing issues such as legalisation and substance abuse. Through its raw analysis of the drug and prostitution sub-cultures, ‘Big Deal’ promotes an anti-drug message.

The play blends theatrical and filmic elements, with avant-garde staging techniques including a projector-screen on which pre-recorded images are projected as backdrops. At certain points throughout the play the characters also interact with other characters projected onto the screen. Writer and director Leete engages multi-media technology to punctuate the emotional landscape of the fallible human.

‘Big Deal’ is co-directed by Leete and Sydney actor John Samaha. It stars Laurence Breuls who featured in Ghostrider starring Nicolas Cage this year, and a strong supporting cast, including ex- Neighbours starlet Simone Oliver. The show will run from the 27th of August to the 6th of September, and will commence at 8pm, excluding the last show which will begin at 6pm and conclude with an after party. Friday 29th of August is the ROAR charity night – for details visit the website.

Melbourne Cinémathèque presents Fritz Lang’s Fatal Vision

Season starts Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at 7:00pm and concludes Wednesday, September 3, 2008 Location: ACMI Cinemas Flinders St Melbourne, Australia Phone:03 96502562 Email: melbournecinematheque@westnet.com.au

Fritz Lang

For details of Screenings:

http://www.melbournecinematheque.org/specials/lang.html

Bypassing the most obvious and widely screened materpieces (Metropolis & M), and appearing ten years after the Melbourne Cinémathèque’s highly successful Lang season, this season of specially imported 35mm prints seeks to explore other key treasures of Lang’s moody, fatalistic oeuvre, including the recent restoration of his renowned Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler, a film that had been butchered to a fraction of its original length, and another underworld thriller, the little known, long considered lost, Die Vier um die Frau.

Lang’s often undervalued American work is represented in this season by 3 seminal noirs: Scarelett Street, demonstrating the ruinous effect of carnal desire; You Only Live Once, a tender study of social injustice; and Fury, his searing assault on the psychology of mob violence. Also included is his dreamlike swashbuckling adventure, Moonfleet, a poetic child’s eye view of the adult world that was rated by Jonathon Rosenbaum as one of the greatest films of all-time.

Time: 11:30am – 1:30pm Location: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Ischia/99/102/705 Ewing Fashion district – Ischia

The Ewing Fashion Agency is proud to present the eclectic late summer Bolero Collection by designer AMANDA BOLERO. You are cordially invited to join us on August 20, 2008, at Ewing’s Fashion District, Ischia, for this exciting presentation.

Amanda on her designs: “My involvement with the fashion field of SL began last year , by chance on one hand, and on the other because I couldn’t find what I wanted. I’m picky and I follow my daily mood on what to wear in RL, and this side of me doesn’t change here in SL . So, when I feel romantic I create a gown , when I feel sexy or aggressive or dream I create the right dress that suits my feeling. I think every woman has to wear what expresses herself and makes her feel comfortable in any situation: from shopping to party, from going to work to staying at home. But they always need a touch of originality and elegance . SL allows me to take out all of my creativity and my passion for fashion and I hope my clients can feel that.”

DJ Sexyjade Echegaray will spoil your ears with her jazzy tunes during the show.
