obscene: Australian premiere

Co-presented with the Melbourne Writers Festival (22nd – 31st August)

obscene Obscene

Denounced by presidents and bankrupted by his passions, the irrepressible Grove Press publisher Barney Rosset was an infamous crusader for free expression who challenged America.

From Burroughs to Beckett and Mailer to Malcolm X, Rosset (now in his 80s) fought obscenity bans to print the confronting works of the time (or otherwise, as when dabbling in distribution with risqué 1967 Swedish film I am Curious Yellow!).

This entertaining documentary is both a cultural and personal history awash with the music of Dylan, Patti Smith and The Doors and is a fascinating thrill ride through America’s post-war literary landscape.

Screenings at ACMI Thu 21 Aug 2008, 7pm Fri 22 Aug 2008, 7pm Sat 23 Aug 2008, 7.30pm Sun 24 Aug 2008, 6pm location ACMI Cinemas audience 18+ admission Full $13 Concession $10 book now or phone (03) 8663 2583

Background: Barney Rosset’s name may not be bandied around as much as Stephanie Rice’s, but without him the world would be a radically different place. In the 1950s and 60s, Rosset embarked on a “literary trench war” in which he fought censorship laws for the right to publish and distribute confronting works such as D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer. His publishing company Grove Press was, according to Rosset, a “breach in the dam of American Puritanism” and introduced America to names like Samuel Beckett, Allen Ginsberg and William S Burroughs. Daniel O’Connor and Neil Ortenberg’s Obscene.

Gadget or the Girl?

A new dating series based on the notion that “boys love their toys” will pit girls against gadgets in an attempt to answer that age-old question: hottie or hot HDTV? In a twist on the reality TV staple For Love or Money, Playboy TV’s Gadget or the Girl will make contestants choose between a weekend getaway with a girl of their choice or a surprise high-tech toy.

The gear will range from a 60-inch plasma TV to an arcade game machine, but the guy won’t know what his prize is until he opts for either the gadget or the girl. Remember, boys: there’s always the chance you’ll just be landing a deodorant-emitting suit.

In each episode, a bachelor will be introduced to three women–presumably with some connection to Hugh Hefner–and must immediately pick two to continue the game.

The threesome will go on a date, and at the end, the guy will choose one girl to be his solo companion for the evening. After a few hours together, he must decide if he is going to enjoy an awkward exciting weekend getaway with the stranger, or give her up and leave with some potentially cool gear.

Darlo by Rowan Hagen

Synopsis It’s the 1980’s and Darlinghurst (Sydney) is home to the truly cool and those just keeping it together, to the up and coming and the down and out.

In the gaudy whirl of ‘darlo‘, Matthew looks no further than the bottom rung, aided by the occasional bottle, while Melanie is steering clear of drugs one day at a time. With help from Jesus, a local eccentric who makes the worst coffee in the world, Melanie and Matthew find each other. Cautiously feeling their way into a relationship, they struggle to learn to trust again.

Meanwhile ‘darlo’ is changing around them, as urban renewal brings in a brittle, cashed-up, cosmopolitan air to the seedy, seamy streets of a close and vibrant community. Will Matthew and Melanie make it, or lose it?

darlo by Rowan Hagen, is a truly Australian love story. Its rich cast of desperately hopeful characters are as real and present today as they were in the 80s.

About the Author: Rowan Hagen has been writing since she learned to form a sentence, drawing on her own life experiences to breathe life into her complex, hopelessly hopeful characters. She writes for all the usual high-minded, creative reasons and, also, because it is hellishly good fun. darlo is her first novel and she is busy on her next.

darlo is distributed in Australia by Dennis Jones & Associates Pty Ltd and available from all good bookstores or online at A&A Book Publishing from August 19 2008.
