Zombie Surfers

Zombie Surfers is a moment inspired by a surf session at Sennen Cove, Cornwall. An eerie fog rolled in whilst waiting for swell in the line-up, causing a quiet and stillness of the sea, surfers losing all sense of direction to the shore. For a while lost surfer souls drifted in the fog like grey shadows…waiting. The art here is not surf inspired, although surfer and artist are in pursuit of the same elusive moment of perfection. It is this elusive moment, which drives them to continue to obsessive lengths. Ironically, attainment of this legendary and enigmatic perfect moment may endanger the perpetuation of the individuals’ obsession, but until then they are drawn towards their goal like stumbling zombies. The exhibition will examine hierarchies within sub-cultural structures and focus on the individuals’ obsession with inclusion or exclusion into the group. For Zombie Surfers, Richard Priestley will build the mythical surf shack, its contents become its icons, effigies and shrines, and its gallerist come shack keeper, its minister. The work selected draws from hybrids of popular culture, which raises questions about the hopes and aspirations of individuals who have an interest in counter-cultural activity. They include cultural references that have, over time, become embedded into a collective consciousness. This work becomes part of the shack and the blurring of edges between art, interior and product opens a dialogue about collaboration and authorship. Visitors are invited to participate and try smoothies, watch films, leaf through zines, play music and hang out…

Sony’s XEL-1 OLED digital television

Earlier this month, the New York TimesDavid Pogue raved that Sony’s XEL-1 OLED digital television is “drool-worthy.” One-eighth of an inch thick, with hallucinogenic color reproduction and a 1,000,000-to-1 contrast ratio, the $2,500 OLED is the ne plus ultra in television picture quality. “It’s like looking out the window. With the glass missing,” said Pogue. A really small window, that is—Sony’s OLED is only 11 inches diagonally.

As a man who loves both television and very small things, I had to see it for myself. Earlier this week, I picked up a drink and some Rice Krispie Treats and headed over to Manhattan’s Sony store to check it out. I planned to stay for however long enough it took to get a feel for the thing. I ended up sitting in front of the tiny TV for five straight hours, moving only to transfer seltzer from a bottle to my mouth and to go to buy a sticky bun.

Besides, sitting so close to the screen makes the viewing experience all the more intimate and impressive. You can see actors’ freckles and pockmarks. You can see the veins in Milla Jovovich’s face. (The veins are gorgeous.) As one well-wisher (there were many throughout the day) told me, “The picture can get so crisp that you can tell the kind of fabric in their shirts.” In the case of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, you can tell that the Thing’s rocky skin is probably made from plastic. The plastic looks great.

Joke

You are driving in a car at a constant speed.

On your left side is a ‘drop off’, the ground is 18-20 inches below the level you are travelling on, and on your right side is a fire engine travelling at the same speed as you.

In front of you is a galloping horse, which is the same size as your car and you cannot overtake it.

Behind you is a galloping zebra. Both the horse and zebra are also travelling at the same speed as you.

What must you do to safely get out of this highly dangerous situation?

For the answer, click and drag your mouse from star to star.

* Get off the merry-go-round – you’re pissed.*
