The Great Internet WikiMarathon

Joseph DelPesco, Steve Lambert, Marisa Olson, Michael Mandiberg, Mr. Bennett Williamson, and Prof. Jamie Wilkinson cordially invite you to participate in The Great Internet WikiMarathon. All are welcome. Feel free to pass on the invitation. Here’s the details: http://thegreatinter.net/wikimarathon

There’s a lack of art/artist info on Wikipedia, and we’re often too busy to find the time to contribute. So, we’re setting aside one day where a crew of people collectively drop serious knowledge into wikipedia about art. From your favorite notable artwork, artist or exhibition, to our soon-to-be-famous peers. We’ll also add structural links to alumni schools and categories like collective art groups, non profit orgs, etc. The day is Saturday January 26th: an afternoon on the internet quietly enriching the public domain. We imagine groups of 2-4 people around tables across the globe, bottomless coffee cups fueling the discussions, fact checking, and troubleshooting. Ideally lots of “oh, that person worked with X, I’ll make a page for them, link me up.” There will also be a lot of online chatting across the world.

Video chats if bandwidth and timezones permit. ==When== Roughly 12-8pm EST (9am-5pm PST) Saturday January 26th/08 (or if these timezones don’t work, make up your own for your own networks elsewhere!!)

==Where== Wherever you want to gather. At the library (there’s books you can reference), at mini house parties, a local art center, or at home. And of course, on the internet.

My Life as a (Pretend) Russian Sexbot

If there’s one thing internet chat rooms normally never run out of, it’s horny “girls” looking for a good time. Despite the intriguing names, there’s always a formidable chance that self-proclaimed cyber-beauties like “CandyCane18” and “Babydoll89” aren’t barely legal. They might not even be female. In fact, they may not even be human.

A Slideshow/Artist Talk on the Street Art Workers

SYDNEY, SquatSpace, NUCA, and MICKIE QUICK presents:

Slideshow/artist talk on the Street Art Workers (www.streetartworker s.org) and their Land and Globalization poster campaign.

SAW’s founding member, Claude Moller, is in Sydney promoting SAW, and he will be on-hand to talk about the group, their international poster project, and state of street art in America.

Established in the U.S. in 2OOl, SAW is a global network of artists who use graphic art to support social change. SAW makes and distributes posters internationally to publicize the work of local grassroots activism. The group relies on street art to take back cities and towns from the businessmen, cops, and politicians who define public space for their own benefit. Since 2001, SAW projects have talked about prisons, the mass media, and utopian ideas for the future.

SAW’s latest campaign, Land and Globalization, looks at how corporate globalization has affected our world, how it has impacted the land, and how people are fighting back. This series includes 25 posters representing artists from 10 different countries and over 20 different cities. These posters illustrate specific struggles in countries like Brazil and the United States, and they also tackle international issues around poverty and gentrification. Along with a strong critique of imperialism, the posters show how communities throughout the world are resisting corporate power for a more just and sustainable world.

Claude Moller is the co-founder of SAW. He is a San Francisco-based activist/street artist who has been making murals, stencils and screenprints since the early 1990s. He is the co-ordinator of the SF Print Collective (www.sfprintcollective.com), and the former manager of the Community Art Program at Hospitality House (www.hospitalityhouse.org). His work has been featured in numerous magazines and books, including Stencil Pirates, The Interventionists and Peace Signs.
