“Food carts seem to line nearly every street in Jakarta. Indonesia’s capital is home to 13 million people, many of whom rely on these ready-to-eat foods sold in neighborhood streets and alleys. The low cost and convenience make them an attractive option for families who are often too busy to prepare food or lack facilities, fuel or transportation to purchase and prepare raw foods…many [children] get a food allowance from their parents, which they usually spend on the vending carts lining the school property, hoping to get a cut.
The options are pretty unhealthy….
…Mercy Corps is working with five entrepreneurs to build food carts that serve nutritious snacks using recipes designed by our health team. The carts are being designed…according to criteria that should make them attractive to small children. For instance, the carts will be colorful, clean and showcase their offerings at a child’s eye level.”

Polar Eyes, is an interactive new children’s book about Antarctica from CSIRO.
The book illustrates author Tanya Patrick’s journey through the scenes and science of one of the most fascinating parts of the planet.
Featured hands-on-activities will bring Antarctic science to your kitchen or classroom. They vary from the tempting: making an edible Antarctica, to the serious: surviving in a white out. The whole family will be kept busy building everything from weather stations to mini-biospheres, all from objects we often throw out in the recycling.
It’s also packed with odd facts to entertain young minds, such as bugs that can be freeze-dried and brought back to life, and how Antarctic scientists have to pollinate cucumber flowers with paintbrushes in their insect-free hydroponic gardens.
Polar Eyes is available for $24.95 through CSIRO at: www.csiroshop.com
Playing it safe online – Aussie Mum develops virtual world for 8-12 year olds
ekidnaworld.com is the brainchild of Brisbane mother of 2, Karen Orford. This exciting new virtual world targeted at the 8-12 year market is an Australian themed, age appropriate website that will both entertain and educate.
A unique feature of ekidnaworld.com is Mate Safety™ an optional add-on safety feature enabling parents to choose/control who their child chats with while online in ekidna World. Surveys show online safety continues to be a major issue of concern for parents of this age group.
Ms Orford developed ekidnaworld.com as she observed her own children become involved with websites created by Disney. “Australia has such diverse landscapes and unique animals that I believed a virtual world involving all these essential Australian characteristics would really appeal to children here and overseas”, said Ms Orford on the launch of her website.
Once children have entered ekidnaworld there are 10 wonderfully unique Australian animal characters to choose from each with their own special dance. The children can move with their character through the many regions of ekidna World, these include; The Rainforest, The Beach, a Tropical Island, The Swamp, The City, The Snowy Mountains, The Bush and of course the famous Australian Outback.
