Web2Open

April 22-25, 2008 South Park, San Fransisco

Web2Open is the “unconference,” where anyone with a Web 2.0 Expo badge can share knowledge and join in open discussions with the community at large in three different ways:

Simply schedule your topic, show up, and lead the discussion. These can be scheduled onsite.

  • Pre-Scheduled Roundtables: Join an open conversation with a panel of community members scheduled in advance.
  • BoFs (Birds of a Feather sessions): Informal group sessions focused on a particular topic that’s been suggested by the attendees. The difference between the BoFs and the Open sessions is that the BoFs gatherings are more loose—some are after-hours—and often don’t have a discussion leader. BoFs may be scheduled in advance or onsite.

One Laptop per Child

If you want to keep abreast of developments in Australia, wander on over to http://www.olpc.org.au and for more infomation about the project itself, there is http://www.laptop.org and http://wiki.laptop.org

The OLPC runs a modified Fedora, with a Python based window manager called Sugar. It has a 1 gig Flash drive, a built in camera and splash proof keyboard, built in speaker too! Built in wifi as well. And it’s green. And white. It looks very iPoddy, actually.

It uses a LiFe battery, giving it 4 1/2 hours life, without any power management. It doesn’t last as long reading a book as say, the eMate, but it’s not bad as laptops go!

Fellas mightn’t be as adapted to the keyboard, but slender handed ladies may well have the advantage. 🙂

* The One Laptop Per Child initiative, a charity which is attempting to create and distribute educational laptops to disadvantaged children, is on its way to Australia. OLPC Australia was unveiled at the Linux.conf.au open source conference in Melbourne in February, 2008.

DRAWING STORIES, PLAYING WITH POEMS

1 Feb – 1 May 2008, Australia Council for the Arts

Drawing stories, playing with poems aims to highlight the changing parameters of literary activity in Australian literature. The Literature Board at the Australia Council particularly encourages  innovative, cross-artform collaborations and emerging forms of  practice. It supports projects that are visually compelling, aesthetically engaging and conceptually sound.

The content of this exhibition demonstrates the strength and vitality of two successful Literature Board grant recipients, multi-award winning writer/illustrator Shaun Tan (VIC) and the creative poetry ensemble, The Red Room Company, headed by Johanna Featherstone (SYD).

It also features an interactive Story of the Future display, inlcuding projects and artists supported through the initiative.   Drop by and check out the display at the Australia Council, Ground Floor, 372 Elizabeth Street, Surry Hills, Sydney between 9am – 5pm, Monday to Friday.
